For the past 2 years, Candace Stewart has volunteered as a Washoe County SAFE (Special Advocate for Elders).

Ms. Stewart served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program of Ventura County, CA for 8 years, assuring that volunteers were familiarized with the rights of residents in long term care facilities, and making sure they were treated with respect, dignity and compassion. Ms. Stewart also facilitated 2 weekly support groups for family caregivers, and performed pre-admission counseling for those facing long term care placement decisions.

Ms. Stewart worked for 3 years as the Chapter Manger for the Alzheimer’s Association of Ventura County, and became very familiar with the challenges facing families with loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease when 2 of her family members were diagnosed.

She is the author of “Welcome to Planet Alzheimer’s”, a short booklet on communicating with those who have moved to Moderate - Severe Alzheimer’s Disease. The book has sold over 4000 copies and is now international.

After receiving her degree in Behavioral Science, Ms. Stewart volunteered her time with the District Attorney’s office in Ventura, CA in the Victim Services Division as a Victim Advocate.

She is a photographer, a writer, and avid kayaker on the beautiful Lake Tahoe and Topaz Lake in Northern Nevada.
